New Rules For Nursing Home Care Proposed By President Biden
In president Bidens 2023 State of the Union address he made a promise to “protect seniors. “ On Sept. 1, 2023 the Biden administration issued a proposal to establish comprehensive staffing requirements for nursing homes across the country.
The President, alongside the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), has proposed a minimum nursing staff standard for facilities participating in Medicare and Medicaid. Regarding the new proposal, Xavier Becerra, the secretary of HHS, told NPR’s Morning Edition “"It's a big change in the sense that the industry hasn't had to follow particular standards..."
Why The New Proposal
Working in a nursing home or senior care home can be a tough, demanding job. According to a report by the National Library of Medicine “Nursing is an occupation associated with burnout amongst its workforce, associated with increases of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and decreases in personal accomplishment.” High turnover of nursing staff is experienced by many homes. And so as part of the White House proposal, CMS would work with private sector partners, investing over $75 million in financial incentives, such as tuition reimbursement. This should help homes retain nursing staff and improve the lives of the seniors living in nursing home and senior homes, and provide increased peace of mind for family members knowing that attention is being given to maintaining approved nursing staff requirements.
"So tonight, let’s all agree to stand up for seniors." - President Joe Biden
