New Nursing Home Staffing Rules May Be Impossible To Comply With
The Biden administration finalized nursing home staffing rules Monday that will require thousands of them to hire more nurses and aides, and so when Vice President Kamala Harris spoke with nursing home workers in La Crosse, Wisconsin, she said “"For residents, this will mean more staff, which means fewer ER visits potentially, more independence... For families, it's going to mean peace of mind in terms of your loved one being taken care of."
Many Nursing Home Operators Claim: ‘How Can (We) Hire More RNs When They Do Not Exist?’
In light of the new Nursing Home Staffing Rules unveiled by the Biden administration and a shrinking RN workforce, LeadingAge President and CEO Katie Smith Sloan said that “...the final rule does not include additional funds to pay RNs comparable or higher wages to work in long-term care” and also said the new rules would require an additional 3,267 additional nursing home RNs. She pointed out “How can providers hire more RNs when they do not exist?”
Report: Knoxville Nursing Facility Overcharged Residents More Than $250K.
An investigation has revealed that a Tennessee nursing home, Creekview Health and Rehabilitation, reportedly “failed to manage and promptly refund accounts” for 81 residents, totaling $265,671.42 , as reported by WVLT News in Knoxville.
The investigation from the Tennessee Comptroller’s office, stated t he errors came about mostly because Creekview did not properly log expenses. Among other overcharges, the investigation found that Creekview had charged six residents a total of $260 for haircuts, which are covered under Medicaid.
Recent U.K. Study Shows Antipsychotics Pose New Risks for People With Dementia
AARP reports on its website that according to a new study by the British Medical Association, drugs are overused in nursing homes where staffing is limited. The drugs risperidone, haloperidol, quetiapine and olanzapine accounted for close to 80 percent of the antipsychotic prescriptions in the study.
The team reporting in the study, analyzed health records of nearly 174,000 people in the United Kingdom diagnosed with dementia from January 1998 to May 2018.
